High Nelly Bike Exhibition

We are delighted to host a display of vintage bikes in the school this week. Pupils have taken on the role of researcher and gathered information from the owners of High Nelly bikes. Some of their stories are published on this website.

Science Exhibition

Pupils from all classes took part in a science exhibition and had great fun showing their experiments to their friends and lots of visitors at Croagh N.S. on Wednesday April 2nd. The experiments included examining plants, searching soil for mini beasts, creating sound, writing using mirrors, making reflections, guessing which objects would float and sink, increasing heart rate, making electrical circuits, looking at microbes, investigating magnetism, examining finger-prints, measuring lung capacity, searching for effective cleaning agents and lots lots more. Thanks to everybody who came along and encouraged the pupils, asked questions and took part in the experiments.

The exhibition is one component of the Discover Primary Science and Maths programme. Other aspects of the programme include observing and recording signs of spring in Ireland.  A nurse also visited the school to explain to the children how science and technology are used in hospitals.

Junior and Senior Infants enjoyed some outdoor learning this week. A dry hour allowed the class to venture to the park to carry out a leaf hunt, some bark rubbings and a hedgehog search!!! Unfortunately they had no luck with finding a hedgehog but they did manage to find sycamore oak, horse chestnut and beech leaves.

Infant Education

The infant classroom is a hive of activity these days. Whether it is turned into a coffee shop or a hospital you can be sure the children are playing and learning and having lots of fun. The infant children are now following the new Early Childhood Curriculum Framework named ‘Aistear’. ‘Aistear’ is a guide in planning learning experiences for both teachers and parents. Through a few basic principles and themes the proagramme aims to develop a child’s learning through play. The programme is its early days of implementation but Miss. O’ Sullivan and the Junior Infants and Senior Infants are looking forward to lots of  ‘Aistear’ fun ahead.

As a result of the fundraiser, children throughout the whole school are becoming competent in the use of technology and enjoying  using the ipads to learn. Infants are using them for literacy and numeracy activities while senior pupils are using them to edit their writing, to broaden their geographical knowledge and to research an array of topics.

Science Exhibition

A science exhibition will take place in the school on March 29th. All classes will be involved in the demonstrations. This is the first time that the junior classes will take responsibility for showing and explaining the experiments that they have investigated during the year. Further information and invitations will be issued in the coming days.
